Is the liquid dose equivalent
to the solid form dose?
This should be verified by an experienced pharmacist as for
some medicines converting from tablets to a liquid formulation
will alter the bioavailability and/or pharmacokinetics of
the medication and dosage or frequency adjustments will be
required.
For example, 90 mg phenytoin liquid is approximately
equivalent to 100mg phenytoin capsules and the dose absorbed
from digoxin elixir is greater than that from a tablet so
a lower dose will be needed. Similarly, if changing from a
modified release product to a liquid formulation, the dose
frequency may need to be increased.
