Swallowing Difficulties

Protocol for Health Care Professionals

This protocol is designed for use with people:

  • Who find it difficult to swallow tablets or capsules
  • Who chew tablets or capsules before swallowing
  • Who keep tablets or capsules in their mouths for a period of time
  • With a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) or percutaneous endoscopic jejunostomy (PEJ) tube in situ.

It provides guidance on the management of patients with both long and short term swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) and will help you to decide on the appropriate course of action with regards to the administration of your patient's medication.

This part is split into 2 sections; each section involves answering a series of questions by clicking on the applicable answer and each answer will lead you to the next question.
